What is THCA?

Vad är THCA? Effekter, Laglighet & Fördelar - DR. Herbals

Last updated: March 2026

THCA is the fastest growing cannabinoid in the UK right now - but what is it, is it legal, and what happens when you use it? Here's everything you need to know, written by us at DR. Herbals, which has been manufacturing and selling THCA products in Sweden since 2019.

What does THCA mean?

THCA stands for Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid - tetrahydrocannabinolic acid. It is a naturally occurring cannabinoid formed in raw, unprocessed cannabis and industrial hemp.

Simply explained: THCA is the precursor to THC. In its raw form, THCA is non-psychoactive - It does not produce an intoxicating effect. It is only when THCA is exposed to heat that it is converted to THC, via a process called decarboxylation.

Think of THCA as "dormant THC" - it's waiting to be activated by heat. The cannabis plant naturally produces THCA, not THC directly. THC always occurs as a result of heat or time.

Short version: THCA is "dormant THC" waiting to be activated by heat. In its natural, unheated form, it is non-psychoactive and legal in Sweden.

THCA is naturally formed in raw, unprocessed industrial hemp.

The difference between THCA and THC

It is easy to confuse the two, but the differences are clear and important to understand.

Chemical formAcid form (with carboxyl group)Active form (without carboxyl group)
PsychoactivityNon-psychoactive in raw formPsychoactive
Presence in the plantRaw, unprocessed seedlingsFormed when heated
Legal status in SwedenLegalClassified as narcotic
ActivationRequires heat (decarboxylation)Already active

The crucial difference is carboxyl group (COOH) - an extra oxygen molecule that prevents THCA from binding effectively to the brain's CB1 receptors. Without that binding, no psychoactive effect occurs.

Is THCA legal in the UK?

Yes - THCA is legal in Sweden under the following conditions:

  • The product is derived from EU approved industrial hemp varieties
  • THC content is less than 0,3% under current EU regulations
  • The product has not decarboxylated (heated to active THC)

THCA itself is not classified as a narcotic in Swedish legislation. The Swedish Medical Products Agency and Swedish authorities assess products based on origin and actual THC content - not THCA content.

Important: If you heat THCA and convert it to THC, you are violating the Narcotics Act. All products from DR. Herbals are sold for decorative and aromatic use. We do not recommend anyone to use the products with the aim of achieving intoxication.

THCA effects - what happens in the body?

In its raw, unheated form, THCA interacts with the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS) in a different way to THC. The ECS is a network of receptors found throughout the body that regulates mood, sleep and pain, among other things.

THCA cannot bind effectively to CB1 receptors in the brain due to its carboxyl group - this is exactly why it does not produce an intoxicating effect in its raw form. Research into THCA's other properties is still at an early stage.

  • No psychoactive effect in raw form
  • No intoxication
  • Does not bind effectively to CB1 receptors

What happens when THCA is heated?

When THCA is exposed to sufficient heat decarboxylation - molecule loses its carboxyl group and is converted into active THC. The process is irreversible.

THCA → (heat) → THC + CO₂

THCA vs THCB vs THCV - what's the difference?

There are many cannabinoids with similar names. Here is a quick overview of the most common ones:

THCA

The precursor of THC. Found naturally in raw hemp. Non-psychoactive. Legal in Sweden.

THC

Active form of THCA. Formed when heated. Psychoactive. Illegal in Sweden.

THCB

Separate cannabinoid with butyl chain instead of pentyl chain. Legal in Sweden.

THCV

Cannabinoid with shorter side chain. Found naturally in some hemp varieties. Legal in Sweden.

CBD

Completely different cannabinoid. Non-psychoactive. Does not convert to THC. Legal in Sweden.

How is THCA stored?

Proper storage is essential to preserve the properties of THCA and prevent unwanted decarboxylation.

Avoid
  • Heat (above 20°C)
  • Direct sunlight and UV
  • Moisture and oxygen
  • Plastic bags
Proceed as follows
  • Airtight glass containers
  • Cool and dark
  • Preferably in the refrigerator for longer storage
  • Avoid temperature fluctuations

Properly stored THCA retains its properties for many months. Over time, slow decarboxylation can occur if the product is exposed to heat, light or oxygen.

THCA varieties - Indica, Sativa & Hybrid

Like traditional cannabis, THCA products are divided into different varieties depending on the genetics of the hemp plant. Variety characteristics affect aroma profile, taste and visual expression.

Indica-dominant THCA varieties

Indica plants are compact with dense, heavy flowers. They are characterized by earthy, sweet and fruity aromas. Typical cultivars include OG Kush, Granddaddy Purple and Northern Lights. Indica varieties are popular for their characteristic scent profile and visually impressive flower structure.

Sativa-dominant THCA varieties

Sativa plants grow tall and produce airier flowers. The aroma profile is often fruity, citrusy and floral. Common cultivars include Sour Diesel, Jack Herer and Amnesia Haze. Sativa varieties are appreciated for their vibrant colors and complex scent profiles.

Hybrid varieties

Hybrids combine genetics from both Indica and Sativa, offering a balanced mix of flavors and visual characteristics. It is the most common category on the market today. Popular hybrid varieties include Gelato, Wedding Cake and Blue Dream.

How to buy THCA safely in the UK?

With a growing range of THCA products on the Swedish market, it is important to know what to look for. Here's what you should check before you buy:

  • Lab-tested products - require the seller to provide analysis reports from independent laboratories confirming THC content below 0.3%
  • EU certified hemp varieties - the product must be derived from approved industrial hemp varieties, not imported from outside the EU
  • Transparency about origin - a reputable operator clearly indicates where the product was grown and processed
  • Swedish contact details - purchases from companies with customer service in Sweden that can answer questions about content and origin
  • Avoid the gray market - products without documentation or lab tests pose a legal and health risk
DR. Herbals tips: Always ask for a Certificate of Analysis (CoA) from the seller you are buying from - a lab test document showing the exact cannabinoid profile and THC content. All reputable operators should be able to provide this.

How much does THCA cost in the UK?

Prices vary according to product type, variety and quality. As a benchmark for well-qualified, lab-tested products:

Product typeApproximate price range
THCA Buds100-200 SEK per gram depending on variety
THCA Vape400-900 SEK per unit
THCA Hash100-200 kr per gram

Keep in mind that extremely low prices often indicate unclear origin or poor quality control.

THCA and research - what do we know?

Research on THCA is still at a relatively early stage compared to the more well-studied cannabinoid CBD. However, the substance has attracted interest among researchers due to its unique chemical structure and natural occurrence in the cannabis plant.

What have researchers looked at?

Studies have mainly looked at the chemical properties of THCA and how it interacts with the body's biological systems. Research published in journals such as Journal of Neuroimmunology and Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research have investigated the potential of THCA, but it is important to underline that the majority of the research is preclinical - that is, conducted in laboratories or on animals, not on humans.

What is CBDA and how does it differ from THCA?

CBDA (cannabidiolic acid) is the acid form of CBD, just as THCA is the acid form of THC. Both are converted to their active forms via decarboxylation when heated. CBDA and THCA have similar chemical structures but completely different properties and origins in the plant.

Important: DR. Herbals makes no medical claims about THCA. All information on this page is for general informational purposes. Always consult a doctor for medical questions.

The future of THCA research

As cannabis legislation changes globally, opportunities for clinical research are also increasing. Sweden and the EU are closely monitoring developments, and more studies on human subjects are expected in the coming years. DR. Herbals follows research trends closely to always offer products that are in line with current legislation and scientific understanding.

Frequently asked questions about THCA

Yes, it is. THCA is legal in Sweden as long as the product is extracted from EU-approved industrial hemp with a THC content below 0.3%. The products are sold for decorative and aromatic use.
CBD and THCA are two completely different cannabinoids. CBD is non-psychoactive and does not convert to THC when heated. THCA is the precursor of THC and can be converted to THC via decarboxylation. They have different chemical structures and completely different properties.
No, THCA in its raw and unheated form does not produce an intoxicating effect. It is non-psychoactive in its natural state and cannot bind effectively to the brain's CB1 receptors.
Standard drug tests test for THC metabolites. If THCA has not been decarboxylated to THC, in theory it should not give a positive result, but we recommend not using the products if you are at risk of being drug tested - we cannot guarantee the outcome.
THCB is another cannabinoid with a similar structure but with a butyl chain instead of a pentyl chain. THCA is the precursor of THC, while THCB is a separate cannabinoid. Both are legal in Sweden.
