THCA vs CBD – What's the Difference and Which is Right for You?

Last updated: April 2026

THCA and CBD are two of the most popular cannabinoids in Sweden right now – but they are very different. Both are legal, both come from industrial hemp, and both have their strengths. This guide will help you understand the differences so you can decide which one is best for you. Do you want buy THCA Direct? See our selection at DR. Herbals.

Vad är THCA och CBD?

Both THCA and CBD are natural cannabinoids found in hemp and cannabis. They belong to the same plant family but have completely different chemical structures and properties.

THCA - or tetrahydrocannabinolic acid - is the precursor to THC. In its raw form, THCA is not psychoactive, but when exposed to heat, it converts to THC through a process called decarboxylation. THCA is naturally found in raw hemp flowers and is the cannabinoid that has grown most rapidly in popularity in Sweden in recent years.

CBD - or cannabidiol - is one of the most well-studied cannabinoids. Unlike THCA, CBD does not convert to THC when heated. CBD is stable, non-psychoactive, and has been available on the Swedish market for a long time.

In short: THCA is the precursor to THC and can be converted by heat. CBD is stable and never converts to THC. Both are legal in Sweden.

Is THCA or CBD psychoactive?

Neither THCA nor CBD is psychoactive in its raw form. This is an important distinction that is often misunderstood.

THCA and psychoactivity

THCA is non-psychoactive in its natural state. It lacks the ability to bind effectively to the brain's CB1 receptors due to its carboxyl group. Only when THCA is exposed to sufficient heat - via decarboxylation - is it converted into THC, which is psychoactive. THCA products are sold in Sweden as collectibles and decorative items, and are not intended for consumption. Read more in our guide on THCA effects in the body.

CBD and psychoactivity

CBD is never psychoactive, regardless of how it is handled. It does not convert to THC and does not affect the CB1 receptors in the same way. CBD is chemically stable and retains its properties regardless of temperature.

Legality in Sweden

Both THCA and CBD are legal in Sweden, but with different conditions.

THCA

THCA is legal in Sweden as long as the product is derived from EU-approved industrial hemp and contains a maximum of 0.3% THC. THCA itself is not classified as narcotics in Swedish legislation. The products are sold as collectibles and for decorative purposes.

CBD

CBD is legal in Sweden and has clearer regulations than THCA. CBD products are sold openly in Sweden, provided they do not contain more than 0.2% THC and are not marketed with medical claims.

Important: Legislation concerning cannabinoids is constantly changing. Always check current regulations with the Swedish Medical Products Agency and the Swedish Board of Agriculture.

Drug test

This is one of the most common questions about THCA and CBD – do they show up on a drug test?

THCA and drug tests

If THCA is heated and converted to THC, metabolites can be formed that will show up on a standardized drug test. If THCA is not exposed to heat, the risk is lower. Read our complete guide about THCA and drug testing for a detailed review of urine samples, saliva samples, and blood samples.

CBD and drug tests

CBD does not typically show up on drug tests because standard tests look for THC metabolites, not CBD. Always choose products with documented low THC content to minimize the risk.

THCA - drug test

  • Risk when heating
  • Do decarboxylated THC metabolites?
  • Blood tests can distinguish THCA from THC

CBD - drug test

  • Minimal risk
  • THC metabolites are not given
  • Choose products with low THC content

Product types

THCA products

THCA is mainly found in formats similar to traditional cannabis products - buds, hash, vapes, and pre-rolls. The products are popular for their aromatic qualities, visual appeal, and natural character.

  • THCA Vape - High THCA Concentration Distillate
  • THCA Hash - Concentrated format with a distinct aroma profile
